Description

Shadows Of The Workhouse is an autobiographical novel about life in a workhouse for orphans and the poor in East London in the 1950s. Jennifer Worth was a nurse and midwife in a convent workhouse she calls Nonnatus House for 21 years and she sensitively and poignantly relates the stories of some of the inmates in this paperback. Frank and Peggy's parents die and the two have no other option but the workhouse. Despite being subjected to exceedingly hard times, Frank's intelligence eventually enables him to carve out a better life for himself and his sister. Sister Monica Joan, nearly 90, bends the rules and goes shoplifting. She is not a typical nun but we are given an insight in Shadows Of The Workhouse into the daily lives of such women who choose to give up the worldly life in order to serve others, including the secular nurses. The author has to take care of old Joe Collett, a veteran from the long-ago Boer War. While nursing his ulcerative legs, she forms a close bond with him and they come to love each other. The indignity with which he is treated is one of the saddest stories in Shadows Of The Workhouse. Shadows Of The Workhouse is a follow-up to the book Call The Midwife.
