It’s always a joy when something you make turns out both beautiful and genuinely useful. This simple air‑dry clay trinket dish is one of those wonderfully versatile crafts — perfect for holding paper clips, jewellery, keys, or all those tiny bits and bobs that seem to wander off on their own.
It’s an ideal project for little hands (with a bit of grown‑up help), and honestly, the charming wobbles and wonky edges are what make each dish feel so special. Every piece comes out with its own personality, making it a lovely handmade keepsake for gifting or keeping.
Air Dry Clay Trinket Dish
You Will Need:
- Air dry clay
- Rolling pin
- Acrylic paints (or water based for younger children)
- Paint brush
- Clear craft sealer
Step 1: Shape the Dish

Roll out a lump of air-dry clay between 1-2 cm thick (depending on how chunky or delicate you would like your dish).
You can shape your dish in several ways, for example, using a jam jar placed in the middle of your clay and roll the edges of your dish upwards to create a rim.
Place your clay over a bowl to create a shallow dip (make sure you place some greaseproof paper between the bowl and your clay).
Freeform the rim of your dish with ruffles, pinches or extra coils of clay. Use water to adhere any additional clay.
Step 2: Smooth the Dish
Use a cup of water to smooth out and cracks and lumps... though remember this is a handmade gift and it’s ok for it to look homemade.
Leave to dry according to the clay manufacturer's instructions, usually 24–48 hours.
Step 3: Paint the Base Coat

Apply a coat of acrylic paint over the entire dish. You can use any colour you like or leave the clay unpainted for a natural look.
Allow the base paint colour to dry completely before moving on to the pattern.
Step 4: Paint your Pattern

Now the fun part... add any design you would like to the top of your dish! You could paint simple daisies, polka dots, gingham checks... or even your teacher’s name.
Allow your pattern to completely dry before moving on to sealing your dish.
Step 5: Seal the Dish

Apply a clear craft sealer over the entire dish, following the manufacturer's instructions.
A satin finish gives a lovely soft sheen, while a matte finish keeps the piece looking more rustic and handmade.
Allow the sealer to cure fully before use.
Happy Crafting!
