How to Make a Fold-Out Snail Mail Letter
What You'll Need
- • Two sheets of A4 card
- • One A6 paper/card, to use as a measuring guide
- • Decorative or patterned paper
- • Plain or lined paper for your letter and inserts
- • A ruler and pencil
- • Scissors
- • A glue stick or double-sided tape
- • Washi tape
- • Autumn stickers and other embellishments
- • Pens and pencils
- • Optional extras: wrapped tea bag, face mask, photograph, or magazine clippings
Step 1: Create the Fold-out Base
1. Place one sheet of A4 card in front of you in landscape orientation. Position an A6 card in the middle and lightly draw around it. The A6 card is simply a measuring guide and will not be glued into the finished project.
2. Cut away the four corner sections of the A4 sheet, following the top and bottom edges of your marked A6 rectangle. You should be left with an A6-sized centre, two large side flaps and two much shorter tabs at the top and bottom.
3. The side flaps may not be exactly the same size, but that does not matter. As long as they overlap when folded, the finished letter will close securely.
4. Take your second sheet of A4 card and place it in portrait orientation. Cut a long strip the same width as your A6 guide, then cut that strip in half. These two pieces will become the full top and bottom panels.
5. Glue one of the new panels onto the short tab above the central rectangle and the other onto the short tab below it. Reinforce each join with washi tape. This strengthens the folds while adding another decorative detail.
6. Fold all four panels in towards the centre, using the edges of the central rectangle as your guide. You do not need to score the card, although you can use a ruler to help make the folds crisp.
7. Cut decorative paper to fit the central section and glue it into place. You can also cover some or all of the folding panels with coordinating paper, leaving a narrow card border around the edges if you wish.
Step 2: Add Pockets and Surprises
1. To create a simple pocket, cut a piece of decorative paper to your chosen size. Apply glue only along the sides and bottom edge, leaving the top open, then press it onto one of the panels. Once dry, you can slip a note, recipe or recommendation inside.
2. Experiment with pockets in different shapes. A triangle glued along two edges makes an easy corner pocket, while a teacup shape can be glued around its sides and base to hold a wrapped tea bag. You could also add a folded piece of paper that opens to reveal a hidden message.
3. Write your letter and prepare the little inserts you would like to include. Arrange everything inside the fold-out card, making sure thicker items are spread between the different panels so the letter can still close comfortably.
4. Finish decorating with autumn stickers, patterned paper, washi tape and handwritten headings. There is no set layout to follow; the joy of this project is creating something personal for the person receiving it.
Step 3: Fold and Close Your Letter
1. Fold the top panel into the centre, followed by the bottom panel. Fold the two side panels over the top, making sure they overlap.
2. Secure the overlapping panels with a strip of washi tape. If you are sending your fold-out letter through the post, place it inside a suitably sized envelope and check the correct postage for its finished thickness and weight.
